Nazy’s Guest House is typical of houses seen in villages across the valley and the Akhmeta region. Our humble two story house and farm occupy three thousand square meters and was built by Nazy’s late grandfather, Abdul Dakishvili, in 1954.

Layout

The house faces west and is set back 150 meters from the western bank of the Alazani river. The land to the front and right-hand side of the house accommodates a garden and open court yard with cooking and modern bathroom facilities. The rear of the house is occupied by a cow shed, chicken pens, fruit orchards, vegetable and herb plots, and fields for growing corn and potatoes.

Architecture
Houses in Pankisi Valley were built to serve a large extended family. It is constructed using local stone and timber in the traditional Caucasian style with characteristic high veranda and sloped tin roof. Thick sturdy walls and oak beams support the two story structure. The ground floor is set slightly lower to the ground level providing a cooler and shaded interior. The family kitchen/dining room, guest lounge and storage room have low ceilings and occupy the ground floor.

First Floor
A wooden staircase leads up to the balcony and into the gallery. There are four bedrooms on the first floor, which have high ceilings, white walls and wooden floor. The decoration throughout the house is simple and homely. There is no air conditioning. We have radiators in three rooms so guests can be accommodated in winter. Oiled filled radiators and extra blankets can be provided.

Renovation
Extensive renovation work was carried out to the building in 2012-13, which included installing a new electrical wiring system throughout the house and new double-glazed windows to the back and sides of the house providing better protection and insulation. We installed new ceilings in every room and all the internal walls were re-plastered and painted. Extensive tiling to the ground floor was also completed.
