What is agrotourism?
Agrotourism is a form of rural tourism, which brings visitors to agricultural, farming or rural environments, but encompasses much more. Compared to mass tourism, agrotourism offers a great alternative if you yearn for freedom and adventure in nature. Sustainability and environmental protection are core to agrotourism’s ethos and practice.
What are its aims?
Agrotourism’s aim is to connect individuals and small groups to traditional rural life, and activities related to it, which provide enjoyable and educational experiences. This form of tourism will appeal to the conscious-minded traveller and outdoor enthusiast who enjoys the experience of meeting new people, learning about their customs and traditions, and exploring beautiful landscapes.
Agrotourism at Nazy’s Guest House
At Nazy’s Guest House we have combined aspects of agricultural, cultural, eco and adventure tourism to develop our services. For more information see the Tours and Treks section.
Benefits of agrotourism
For small rural communities like ours in the Pankisi Valley, agrotourism offers one of the best ways to improve incomes for families surviving on subsistence farming. The region is impoverished due to high unemployment especially among the younger population. We believe agrotourism will help to create income generating opportunities and contribute to the gradual regeneration of the community. Moreover it brings different people and cultures closer together.
Agrotourist training
In 2008 The Polish Foundation of Intercultural Education provided agrotourism training to a group of Kists. This training helped Nazy to realise the potential for sustainable development through agrotourism. Nazy’s Guest House is one of the first online self-managed enterprises to emerge and is actively promoting its distinct form of agrotourism and adventure travel within Georgia and abroad.
Experiencing traditional rural life
The experience of staying on a farm allows visitors to rediscover the traditions lost in many societies. By living with a host family guests will get to know the rhythm of rural life, experience the sounds and smells, see how a farm is managed first hand, eat fresh organic food, explore the beautiful landscapes and get to know the local people, their culture and history.
